Hi all. Most of us are badly affected by recession in this time. Now when companies are holding back we need to prepare correctly and effectively to clear a walk-in. As I have got a very good job with great pay scale in this recession era, there are few details I want to share with you which may come handy for you people.

First of all, for off campus you need to be in the city you where job exists, you can’t just simply apply residing at home and expect offer letter in your hand. Most of the time details you get is just one day (or I say night) before the interview or walk-in.

Second in city like Bangalore (may be happen in other cities also, but I searched mainly in Bangalore), you need human network. Means you have to make fellow aspirants friends and share your contacts (mobile number to be precise) with them, so that they text you the next interviews and you have to spread the same message to all your contact list once you get the text. This is very important and helps fetching you great deal of opportunities.

The main domain searched off campus is IT. Aspirants from all of the branches search in this domain only. Although there can be jobs in other domains also but they are so less and competitions are so high that people keep themselves off from it. In Bangalore at least, if you’re searching go for IT jobs and take all ECE test meanwhile.

Now once you get the chance for walk-in, these 4 main steps are involved in selection (not all are always necessary). Anyhow IIT, NIT n BIT students get extra benefit by having separate exams at some places or direct interview round for them, the order of preference remains the same.

1. Written Test – This is almost mandatory step. Written tests consists of aptitude test (they range from stupidly simple to downright tough but all are fun and can get you high score), C/C++/Java (any one of the languages, usually for checking basic programming knowledge and simple soft skills), Data Structures (definitions and algorithm, a must for many companies), Databases (Normalization and basic SQL questions nothing much to ponder), no OS or Networking. For ECE students, Microprocessors, Assembly Language, Digital Electronics, and Computer Architecture is requires if they try in core domain.

2. Group Discussion – Once you’re through written, you may have to face group discussion as this step is not mandatory for all walk-ins. In GD against popular belief, it’s not necessary that only starter or concluder get heard or you need to continuously speak till the end of GD. All you need to focus what others are saying and make a perfect statement so that every head moves to you and your thought get sufficient weight. For example, I swept one GD by saying just a single line.

3. Technical Interview – A must in the process. You have to face it and you have to be preparing most for this only. Here you can expect variety of questions. All technical questions are from the parts mentioned in written test. Get ready as they dig deep in your knowledge base to know your potential. It can also go very long. The longest technical interview I’ve faced is of 4 hours. They always try to tear you apart and if you succeed in saving yourself, you can expect very easy path ahead.

3a. Second Technical / PM Round – This can be a step in the selection process used mainly to get rid of redundant aspirants or if there is no HR round. This step is mix of technical and HR. Different questions are asked and your suitability for the project is also checked if it is PM Round.

4. HR Round – The last step in the selection process. Seems an easy go but rejection in this round is easy (in fact I have been rejected in this round several times). There’s a lot depends on HR mentality but you should always remember what you have written in you CV. You have to be very careful in choosing your words while crafting your CV as some HR go so dirty that they ask meaning and purpose of words you’ve used in CV. Puzzles are easy to expect and hard to tackle. So preparation is absolute must.

Sometimes all these steps take too much of time so be prepared. The longest time I’ve spent in office was 13 hours and that too with single meal. Be not only mentally but physically prepared for such challenges.

You need to register all possible job sites like Naukri, MonsterIndia, Shine, Timesjobs, etc. to increase the chances to get call letter. Also remember to update your profile in maximum 3 days as job sites usually don’t entertain older profiles.

For a lot of walk-ins and other job opportunities, log on to these sites frequently.
