करीब 31 हजार करोड़ की लागत से आईएनएस विक्रांत के तैयार होने के साथ भी भारत दुनिया के उन चुनिंदा देशों में शुमार हो गया है जिसके पास अत्याधुनिक विमान वाहक पोते हैं। इस पोत का निर्माण कोचीन शिपयार्ड लिमिटेड ने किया है। करीब 40 हजार टन की क्षमता वाले इस विमानवाही पोत के निर्माण का 55 प्रतिशत कार्य इसी शिपयार्ड में पूरा हुआ।
इस पोत को 2018 में नौसेना में शामिल किया जाएगा। इस पर रूस निर्मित मिग-29 के और हल्के लडाकू विमान के नौसैनिक संस्करण (एलसीए), कोमोव 31 हेलीकॉप्टर तैनात किए जा सकेंगे। 265 मीटर लम्बे और 60 मीटर चौडे इस पोत में आठ डीजल से चलने वाले जेनरेटर लगे हैं, जो चार मेगावाट ऊर्जा का उत्पादन कर उसकी ऊर्जा जरूरतो की पूर्ति करेगा।
भारत इस प्रथम स्वदेशी विमानवाहक पोत जलावतरण के बाद विश्व के उन चुनींदा देशों के विशिष्ट समूह में शामिल हो गया है, जिन्हें विमानवाहक पोत के डिजायन, निर्माण और संरचनात्मक कार्यों में तकनीकी विशिष्टता हासिल है।

50 डिग्री के तापमान में काम करते हैं इंजीनियर

आईएनएस विराट के बॉयलर रूम का न्यूनतम औसत तापमान ही 50 डिग्री सेल्सियस के करीब होता है। वारशिप का पावर जेनरेशन यहीं होता है। यहां की जिंदगी सबसे मुश्किल होती है। मैरीन इंजीनियर यहीं काम करते हैं। वर्तमान में आईएनएस विराट के मास्टर चीफ मैरीन इंजीनियर तारेंद्र प्रताप सिंह 20 साल से इस दिलेरी भरे काम को अंजाम दे रहे हैं। यूपी में उन्नाव के रहने वाले तारेद्र ने पिछले 25 सालों की सेवा के 20 साल विराट पर ही गुजारे हैं।

Spurred on: India's rivalry with neighbouring China has seen it build up its naval capabilities in recent years

It is more than five times larger than any other ship built in India.

Once complete the ship will be more than 850ft (260m) long, with a breadth of 196ft (60m).

The ship's production work began in November 2006. It has been designed by the Directorate of Naval Design.

Vice Admiral K. Nair, Controller Warship Production and Acquisition, said: 'We have built 6,000 to 7,000 tonnage capacity ships so far. This is 37,500 tonnes.'
He said they had encountered a number of issues during the first phase of construction.

Vice Admiral Nair said: 'Availability of steel, problems with acquisition of machines were some of them.

'Most of the equipment has gone on board while the weapons have to be inducted. It has got ski jump from where aircraft will take off.'

Commodore K. Subramaniam, Cochin Shipyard chairman and managing director, said the next phase will include laying of electric cables, ventilation systems and setting up about 2,300 compartments and will take about four years to complete.

Diesel generators and gas turbines, capable of lighting up the whole of Kochi, have already been installed.

The Indian naval milestone comes amid rising tensions in the region between China and Japan.
