The 100 Rupee and 500 rupee note have the same width and that is why is becomes possible, though the length of both notes is the same.

If the widths were also different, such frauds can be avoided.

Another trick: remove one 500 Rupee note from the bundle and fold another note near the centre of the thickness of the bundle it to half the size. If you count from the side of the open end of the folded note, you will not notice the shortage of one note.
