धोनी के रिटायरमेंट पर सचिन तेंडुलकर ने टि्वटर पर लिखा, ''well done on a wonderful career in test cricket''. वहीं, पूर्व कप्तान गावस्कर ने कहा, ''वह हमेशा से फ्रंट पर आकर लीड करते रहे हैं। उन्होंने हमेशा दूसरे खिलाड़ियों के लिए उदाहरण सेट किया। वह हमेशा कूल रहते हैं। आप दबाव में कप्तान को सिर खुजाते और ऊंगली के नाखून चबाते देखते हैं। लेकिन धोनी कभी नर्वस नहीं होते, ताकि दूसरे खिलाड़ियों पर दबाव न बने। टी 20 वर्ल्ड कप के फाइनल के आखिरी ओवर में जोगिंदर शर्मा की गेंदबाजी पर लगातार प्रहार हो रहे थे, लेकिन वह नर्वस नहीं हुए।''
