How to mind map

How to use mind maps to take notes, organise and structure your thoughts and ideas, and to help you remember your work.

About mind maps

Mind mapping is a technique which uses diagrams to represent ideas.

Mind maps imitate the way we think which is why they are one of the most effective aids to learning and memory.

Mind maps use a central image with branches radiating out from the centre.

- Each branch represents a key theme.

- Details are added to the main branches in the form of sub-branches.

The more visual a mind map is, the more effective it is; so when drawing a mind map, use

- colour

- pictures

- symbols (e.g. arrows showing the connections between topics), etc.

A good mind map shows the 'shape' of the subject.

Mind maps are easy to remember and quick to review.

Mind maps can be used for

- summarising information.

- consolidating information from different sources.

- thinking through complex problems.

- showing the overall structure of a subject.
