It is obvious that the merchant was lying and the beggar was speaking the truth.
If the beggar were dishonest, why would he not keep all the 200 coins?
Why would he risk getting caught by announcing that he had found a purse with only 100 gold coins.
The merchant was not only dishonest but also stupid.
He deserved what he got
