बिल्ली पर मुहावरे

as conceited as a barber’s cat का अर्थ है अत्यधिक अहंकारी.
My friend became as conceited as a barber’s cat after she won the award at school.

as weak as a kitten का अर्थ है कमज़ोर, बीमार
The girl is as weak as a kitten and cannot carry her school bag.

cat gets one’s tongue का अर्थ है शर्मीलेपन के कारण न बोल पाना
The cat got the woman’s tongue and she could not say anything at all.

a cat nap का अर्थ है झपकी लेना (दिन में) थोड़ी देर सो जाना
I had a cat nap during the afternoon so that I would feel refreshed in the evening party.

a cat on a hot tin roof बेचैन, घबराया हुआ या चिंतित. इसे like a cat on hot bricks भी कहते हैं.
She has been like a cat on a hot tin roof ever since she heard her lover is back in town.

a copycat का अर्थ है नक़लची.
The boy is a copycat according to the other students in the class.

curiosity/care killed the cat का अर्थ है चिंता चिता समान, अत्यधिक चिंता के कारण परेशानी में पड़ जाना.
You should not worry about what your friend is doing. Remember, curiosity killed the cat.

let the cat out of the bag का अर्थ है राज़ खोल देना.
The leader let the cat out of the bag when he began talking about the plans for the new stadium.

play cat and mouse का अर्थ है परेशान करना, मूर्ख बनाना, तरह तरह के उपाय करना, लुका-छुपी, आम तौर पर विथ (with) के साथ प्रयोग होता है.
Some actors and actresses spent a large proportion of their time playing cat and mouse with the press.

put the cat among the pigeons का अर्थ है परेशानी बढ़ाना.
Sending the bad supervisor to talk to the angry workers was like putting the cat among the pigeons.

rain cats and dogs का अर्थ है मूसलाधार बारिश होना
It has been raining cats and dogs all day and there could be flood like Bihar anytime.

चूहे पर मुहावरे

rat on का अर्थ होता है चुग़ली खाना, शिकायत करना, प्रायः किसी के साथ
The little boy ratted on his friend at school.

rat out on (someone) का अर्थ होता है साथ छोड़ देना, धोखा देना.
The boy ratted out on his friends and now they won’t talk to him.

rat race का अर्थ होता है बेतहाशा होड़, अंधी दौड़, बेमक़्सद की भाग दौड़.
My uncle is tired of being in the rat race every day and he plans to quit his job soon and do something else.

smell a rat का अर्थ होता है दाल में काला होना, संदेह होना.
I smell a rat. There is something wrong with the offer of a free credit card.

be as quiet as a mouse का अर्थ होता है बहुत ख़ामोश होना, बिलकुल चुप-चाप, शर्मीला.
She was as quiet as a mouse. I didn’t even know she’d come in.

as poor as a church mouse का अर्थ है बहुत ग़रीब, निर्धन.
My cousin is as poor as a church mouse and never has any money to spend.

when the cat’s away, the mice will play जब कोई निगरानी करने वाला न हो तो मनमानी करना.
When the cat’s away, the mice will play and when the teacher left the classroom the students began to move around.

1. A cat has nine lives: A proverb expressing the belief that it is very difficult to kill a cat.

(ऐसी मान्यता कि बिल्ली को मारना बहुत कठिन है)
