DaMarcus Beasley, the first American to play in four World Cups, passed the ball on the left flank to Jermaine Jones, who sent it on to Dempsey.

The US captain cut between Sulley Muntari and John Boye and beat goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey with a left-footed shot from 8 yards that went in off the far post, setting off raucous cheers from the red, white and blue-clad American fans at the other end of Arena das Dunas.

The forward became the first American to score in three World Cups; Dempsey had goals against Ghana in 2006 and England four years ago as a midfielder. This was the first goal by an American forward since Brian McBride's against Mexico in 2002.

The only faster goals were by Turkey's Hakan Suker (11 seconds against South Korea in 2002), Czechoslovakia's Vaclav Masek (16 seconds against Mexico in 1962), Germany's Ernst Lehner (25 seconds against Austria in 1934) and England's Bryan Robson (27 seconds against France in 1982).

Default Re: 2014 FIFA World Cup

The second instalment of group-stage games has barely begun, but already a raft of sides lie within sight of the knockout phase. For Colombia or Côte d'Ivoire, that could mean an early spot in the Round of 16, with the leading duo in Group C facing off in a potentially crucial encounter. Colombia will advance if they prevail and Japan then fail to beat Greece, although the South Americans – already missing star striker Falcao – will have to cope without injured forward Carlos Bacca. As for Côte d'Ivoire, they will progress if they win and Greece do not overcome Japan.

In contrast, former FIFA World Cup™ winners England and Uruguay will be fighting for survival. Should they lose, the Three Lions would be eliminated if Italy then drop points against Costa Rica on Friday. Likewise, La Celeste, who have conceded three goals in each of their last three games, will be heading for the exit if they suffer defeat and Los Ticos do not see off Italy. The situation also looks similar for Japan and Greece, who shipped three goals against Colombia after letting in only four during their ten qualifiers. The Greeks will be out if they lose and Côte d'Ivoire avoid succumbing to Los Cafeteros, while Japan will suffer the same fate if they are beaten and Colombia cannot down Les Elephants.

The matches
Colombia-Côte d'Ivoire (Group C), Estadio Nacional, Brasilia, 13.00 (local time)
Uruguay-England (Group D), Arena de Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, 16.00 (local time)
Japan-Greece (Group C), Estadio das Dunas, Natal, 19.00 (local time)

Did you know?
African trailblazer? Côte d'Ivoire's Didier Drogba, Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o and Ghanaian duo Asamoah Gyan and Sulley Muntari are all vying for the honour of being the first African to find the net in three separate World Cups. In addition, Drogba will face Colombia looking to become the sixth player to score against a trio of CONMEBOL sides on the World Cup stage. The Galatasaray marksman, who registered against Argentina in 2006 and Brazil four years ago, would thus follow in the footsteps of David Beckham, Uwe Seeler, Jairzinho, Roberto Rivelino and Grzegorz Lato – exalted company indeed.

Longevity: Faryd Mondragon will become the oldest player in World Cup history if he makes an appearance at Brazil 2014. Aged 42 years and 363 days, the back-up to Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina will beat the current benchmark by 324 days if he features against Côte d'Ivoire. The record of 42 years and 39 days belongs to former Cameroon forward Roger Milla, who would nonetheless remain the most senior outfield player.

Third time lucky: England will face Uruguay having lost their last two finals matches, their 2-1 defeat by Italy coming four years after they were swept aside 4-1 by Germany on 27 June 2010. The bad news for their next opponents, however, is that the 1966 champions have never lost three consecutive World Cup outings.

Suspended players

Souleymane Bamba, Didier Zokora (CIV)

Check it out
Despite Japan's painful reverse at the hands of Côte d'Ivoire, goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima insists that his side have no intention of abandoning their commitment to attacking football. "We want to keep the ball and move it forward, using all of our qualities and technical ability to score goals," he said ahead of their Greece test. Elsewhere on the website, fans of Didier Drogba are sure to enjoy re-watching video highlights of his South Africa 2010 campaign, while FIFA.com caught up with Greece striker Giorgios Samaras. "I know what everyone expected of Greece: that we would have 11 men behind the ball, defend, defend, defend and give everything to keep a clean sheet," he said. "But they saw a team that likes to attack, that moves the ball really well, and that tries always to create chances. That philosophy will not change. We just hope it brings a better result for us."

On this day
On 19 June 1958, 26,000 spectators filed into Gothenburg's Ullevi Stadion to watch Brazil take on Wales in the quarter-finals. Little did they know that they would also be witnessing the coming of a new king – but they were given an inkling on 66 minutes, when an unknown youngster with outrageous skill controlled a pass with his chest before flicking it behind a defender and finding the net. Aged 17 years and 239 days, Pele had just made history, and he remains the youngest World Cup scorer of all time, having later added a long list of records and titles over the course of his incredible career. Still, despite notching a hat-trick against France in the last four and a double versus hosts Sweden in the Final that year, O Rei finished runner-up to 13-goal Just Fontaine in the tournament scoring stakes, while the best-player plaudits went to his compatriot Didi.

Chile stunned Spain 2-0 to secure a place in the knockout phase with a Group B game to spare and eliminate the FIFA World Cup™ holders. Eduardo Vargas and Charles Aranguiz sent the South Americans in at the break at a two-goal cushion, and though the Iberians tried relentlessly to get back into the game after the restart, they were unable to find a way past Claudio Bravo.

After a humbling 5-1 defeat by the Netherlands in their curtain-raiser, Spain coach Vicente del Bosque dropped Xavi and Gerard Pique, but their rocky start continued as Chile had two great opportunities go ahead before even two minutes had been played. The quick feet of Alexis Sanchez got their defence in a muddle, but Eduardo Vargas opted to take a touch, rather than shoot, seeing the ball ricochet just beyond the post off a Spanish leg. The danger did not end there though, as Sergio Busquets failed to clear the resulting corner, with Gonzalo Jara all alone to head inches wide of the top corner.

Jorge Sampaoli's team did nevertheless find a breakthrough on 20 minutes - and it was a goal the Europeans would have been proud of. Delightful interplay between Sanchez and Arturo Vidal sliced through the midfield, with the ball being worked to Charles Aranguiz in the area. His cute pass inside found Vargas, who had the presence of mind to take a touch – eliminating Iker Casillas from the game – before slotting in past the sliding Xabi Alonso. It is arguably the team goal of the tournament so far.

Alonso and Diego Costa fired over and wide respectively as La Furia Roja tried to restore parity. But the instant response the Spanish fans were hoping for did not arrive as Chilean intensity prevented Vincente Del Bosque's side replicating either their mesmeric passing or suffocating possession that has brought them so much success.

Vidal recently described their style of play as “suicidal” to FIFA, however in the first-half it was anything but, frustrating the UEFA EURO 2012 winners, with an unnecessary foul by Xabi Alonso bringing about their second goal. Sanchez's free-kick was poorly punched by Casillas to the feet of Aranguiz, who trapped the ball superbly and toe-poked it beyond the despairing reach of Spain's record cap-holder.

Costa could have made the perfect start after the break, after a surgical Iniesta pass put him one-on-one with Claudio Bravo, only for the ball to get caught under his feet, allowing Mauricio Isla to pull off a last-ditch tackle. The Atletico Madrid forward turned creator as Busquets spurned an even better chance. Chile failed to clear a Sergio Ramos free-kick, and when the Brazil-born player's spectacular bicycle-kick flash across goal, the Barcelona midfielder missed from four yards with the goal at his mercy.

Chile visibly tired in the latter stages of their first outing at Brazil 2014, but while they soaked up Spanish pressure they were still dangerous on the break in the Maracana. Vargas picked out the overlapping Eugenio Mena on the left-hand side, and though his shot was going wide, Isla slid it at the far post to fire narrowly over.

Substitute Santi Cazorla, twice, and Iniesta tested Bravo from distance, but the goalkeeper was equal to them and it sealed a disastrous exit for Del Bosque's boys.

The Netherlands have put one foot in the Round of 16 with a fantastically entertaining 3-2 win over Australia at the Estadio Beira-Rio in Porto Alegre. The Socceroos, for their part, now stand on the brink of elimination despite an excellent performance, and the fate of both teams will be confirmed should Chile win or draw against Spain in today's second Group B encounter.

Louis van Gaal went into this game with an unchanged line-up for the first time since taking charge of the Netherlands, but any hopes he had of his team picking up where they left off against the Spanish were to prove in vain. Australia were the best team by a distance in a first half that was illuminated by two outstanding goals, and by terrific wing play by the enterprising Mathew Leckie.

The Frankfurt wide man caused the Dutch all sorts of problems and created the game's first genuine opportunity after 16 minutes when he skipped away from his marker and picked out Mark Bresciano at the edge of the box. The Qatar-based midfielder was quickly closed down by defenders, though, and saw his shot deflected behind for a corner.

A goal would have been no more than the Socceroos deserved, even at that early stage, but four minutes later they found themselves behind after a lightning Dutch breakaway. The goal was all down to the speed and quality of Arjen Robben, with the Bayern Munich star spinning away from Alex Wilkinson on the halfway line, racing powerfully towards goal and angling a precise left-foot shot into the far corner of the net.

It was a brilliant strike - one of the best of the tournament so far - and yet it was to be bettered within a few seconds at the other end. This was a very different kind of goal, with Tim Cahill allowing a long ball to drop over his shoulder before smashing a first-time volley in off the underside of the crossbar - and this with his supposedly weaker left foot.

No-one could quibble with the fact that the Aussies were well worth their superb equaliser, and they should have gone into the interval with a one-goal advantage. As it was, Bresciano - having been teed up by yet more positive wing play by Leckie - leant back at the crucial moment and directed his right foot shot over the bar when a goal seemed likely.

The Dutch, having changed their shape due in part to an injury to Bruno Martins Indi, began the second half more brightly and forced an excellent early save from Maty Ryan through Wesley Sneijder. However, they were to find themselves behind just eight minutes after the restart when Mile Jedinak coolly slotted home from the penalty spot, sending Jasper Cillessen the wrong way after Daryl Janmaat had been penalised for a handball.

Australia's lead lasted barely longer than the Netherlands' had in the first half, though, with Robin Van Persie equalising inside four minutes. There was never any doubt once the Oranje's record scorer sprung the Aussie offside trap, with Van Persie able to set his sights before crashing a left-foot shot into the roof of the net from ten yards.

Ultimately, this thrilling end-to-end game was decided in the space of a minute midway through the second half, when the Dutch scored just seconds after the Socceroos had missed a gilt-edged chance. Tommy Oar was the guilty party, opting to cross for Leckie, who could only chest into the arms of Cillessen, rather than go for goal himself from an unmarked position inside the box. That decision was punished in the very next attack, when substitute Memphis Depay turned, advanced and beat Ryan from 25 yards with a low, swerving right-foot shot.

It was to prove the final goal of a match that will live long in the memory, and which could prove hugely significant in determining the outcome of Group B.

Cameroon have crashed out of the FIFA World Cup™ after a resounding 4-0 defeat to Croatia in which they were reduced to ten men. The Indomitable Lions were second best throughout this Group A encounter in Manaus, which ended with their European opponents having boosted their hopes of vying with Brazil and Mexico for a place in the Round of 16. Croatia now know that the winner of their final group phase encounter with El Tri will advance, while Cameroon will conclude their doomed campaign against the hosts.

Niko Kovac's side had impressed in spells against Brazil in their opening match and their class told in this encounter, with the outcome rarely in danger from the 11th minute onwards. That was when Ivica Olic, 34, became his country's oldest World Cup goalscorer, firing home first time with his left foot after being teed up at close range by Ivan Perisic's perfectly weighted pass.

Perisic was a dangerous and influential player throughout, and he found the net with nine minutes of the first half remaining, directing a powerful header just over. Cameroon had barely threatened at this stage and their frustration boiled over four minutes later when Alex Song earned an inevitable straight red card for a off-the-ball arm in the back of Mario Mandzukic. That show of indiscipline made an already difficult task near-impossible, and Croatia effectively moved out of sight just three minutes into the second period.

This goal was something of a personal disaster for Charles Itandje, whose botched clearance was seized upon at the halfway line by Perisic. Plenty of work remained to be done, but the Wolfsburg midfielder's pace took him clear in the left channel and he deceived Itandje by shaping to cross and instead side-footed into the net at the keeper's abandoned near post.

Croatia continued to dominate and Mandzukic could and should have added a third shortly after when he raced clean through only to delay his shot too long and, under pressure, scoop the ball wide. But the Bayern Munich striker would not be denied, and he completed a brace midway through the half. The first saw him rise unchallenged at corner to bullet home a downward header, while the second came about when he profited from another mistake by Itandje, who spilled a tame Eduardo shot at the feet of Croatia's predatory No17.

The scoreline offered just reward for Kovac's side's overall superiority, and they will now hope to continue their free-scoring ways against a Mexico team that shut out the hosts.
