As the number of online users grow so does the interest in shopping on internet.
At the beginning of 2013, India had seen 50 per cent growth in total internet user base compared to the year before, according to data from com Score. This rise has made India the fifth largest e-commerce market in terms of visitors to retail categories.
The growing online retail market has become such a lucrative business that global internet giant Amazon, which has concentrated on biggest markets until now, started an India-centric website in June.
Let’s look at the top online retail companies from the 77.1 million, or 7.71 crore, unique visitors that logged on to internet

HomeShop18

Unique visitors: 8.1 million
Reach: 10.5 per cent
HomeShop18 is a venture of Network 18 group that started out as a 24-hour channel. Headquartered in Noida, the company expanded its presence to the internet as online shopping has just started picking up.

Snapdeal
Rank: 5
Unique visitors: 8.4 million
Reach: 10.9 per cent
The company was started by two friends as a deal platform in 2010. Later, Snapdeal expanded to a full-fledge online retailer.
The founders include Kunal Bahl, a Wharton graduate and presently the CEO, and Rohit Bansal, alumnus of IIT Delhi who is also the Chief Operating Officer of Snapdeal.

Amazon Sites

Unique visitors: 11.92 million
Reach: 15.5 per cent
Amazon ventured in India first through Junglee.com in 2012 and about a year later launched an India-centric website.
Slowly, Amazon is expanding its product offering in India. Currently, it sells books and electronic products.

Unique visitors: 12.42 million
Reach: 16.1 per cent
Cofounded by Arun Chandra Mohan, Praveen Sinha and Lakshmi Potluri, Jabong went live in 2012. The website at present carries over 700 brands and over 50,000 products

Unique visitors: 12.64 million
Reach: 16.4 per cent
Like Amazon, Flipkart started as an online book retailer and later expanded its product range. Today the company is present across product range - from electronics to fashion.
Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, both alumni of IIT Delhi, started the company in 2007. Before turning entrepreneur, the duo was working for Amazon in India.

Unique visitors: 13.17 million
Reach: 17.1 per cent
Another product of IIT alumni, Myntra was started by Mukesh Bansal, Ashutosh Lawania, and Vineet Saxena in February 2007.
The company had started as a business-to-business portal that offered personalisation of product and in 2010 turned focus on retail market.

I have done quite a bit of shopping for bus/train/air tickets on line.
I have also taken advantage of cinema ticket booking online.

I have not purchased anything from these shopping sites so far.
