Re: Picture of the day
Belgian designers have designed a transparent church.
From a certain angle it merges with the environment and is virtually invisible .

SELJALANDSFOSS, ICELAND
Seljalandsfoss is located between Selfoss and Skogafoss on the Southern Ring Road (Iceland’s main highway) down to Vik. The picturesque waterfall plummets 60 m (200 ft) to a deep pool below. Visitors can even hike around the pool to the back of the falls for a unique perspective many of us will never experience when viewing a waterfall. A little further to the west there are several other falls, among them the interesting Gljúfrabúi which is partially masked by its own canyon. |

Re: Picture of the day
On Dec. 6, 1998, the crew of space shuttle mission STS-88 began construction of the International Space Station, attaching the U.S.-built Unity node and the Russian-built Zarya module together in orbit. The crew carried a large-format IMAX® camera, used to take this image of Unity lifted out of Endeavour's payload bay to position it upright for connection to Zarya. Zarya, launched on Nov. 20, 1998, was the first piece of the International Space Station. Also known as the Functional Cargo Block (FGB), it would provide a nucleus of orientation control, communications and electrical power while the station waited for its other elements. Two weeks later, on Dec. 4, 1998, NASA's space shuttle Endeavour launched Unity, the first U.S. piece of the complex, during the STS-88 mission. |

WORKPLACE SAFETY, 1926
Seen here are painters atop the Woolworth Building in New York City in 1926. Just looking at this photo makes my stomach churn and palms sweat. How is that guy just standing on that spire like that? The Woolworth Building at 233 Broadway in Manhattan was designed by architect Cass Gilbert and was completed in 1913. At 241.4 m (792 ft) in height, it remains one of the fifty tallest buildings in the United States, even after a century. Not only that, but it is also one of the oldest skyscrapers in the United States and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. |

Crab Nebula, as Seen by Herschel and Hubble
This image shows a composite view of the Crab nebula, an iconic supernova remnant in our Milky Way galaxy, as viewed by the Herschel Space Observatory and the Hubble Space Telescope. Herschel is a European Space Agency (ESA) mission with important NASA contributions, and Hubble is a NASA mission with important ESA contributions. A wispy and filamentary cloud of gas and dust, the Crab nebula is the remnant of a supernova explosion that was observed by Chinese astronomers in the year 1054. The image combines Hubble's view of the nebula at visible wavelengths, obtained using three different filters sensitive to the emission from oxygen and sulphur ions and is shown here in blue. Herschel's far-infrared image reveals the emission from dust in the nebula and is shown here in red. While studying the dust content of the Crab nebula with Herschel, a team of astronomers have detected emission lines from argon hydride, a molecular ion containing the noble gas argon. This is the first detection of a noble-gas based compound in space. The Herschel image is based on data taken with the Photoconductor Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) instrument at a wavelength of 70 microns; the Hubble image is based on archival data from the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2). |
