Lightbulb Improve your Vocabulary

Good vocabulary is very important for one’s success in career as it helps you to use more descriptive words to better communicate your thoughts.

Suppose you apply for a job, or you have to give any presentation or speech, in such cases your vocabulary will determine whether or not you’re successful.

Just imagine you have a billion dollar idea, but you are not able to convince your investors because of your poor vocabulary. To avoid such situations you must have a good knowledge of high frequency English words.

Good Vocabulary also helps you to better understand information that you are reading or listening, thereby increases your retention. Now a days, good Vocabulary is indispensable for competitive examinations like CAT, GRE, GMAT, XAT etc.

In this thread, everyday I will discuss some of the high frequency words that are asked in competitive exams.

Do you know the meaning of word

Bacchanalian

Adjective: Characterized by or given to drunken revelry; riotously drunken.

This word originated from a greek word called Bacchanalia. The bacchanalia were wild and mystic festivals of the Greek and Roman god Bacchus (or Dionysus). The word has since come to describe any form of drunken revelry.

In short, you can use Bacchanalian to describe a person consuming alcohol.

Now how to remember its meaning, it's very simple, just imagine Amitabh Bachchan drinking in Sharabi Movie.

Nice Thread to start bro.
I really appreciate you for this idea.

My contribution is a phrase 'Achilles heel'.

It refers to someone's deadly weakness.
The story behind this phrase is moreover like Duryodhan's story in Mahabharat, i hope that will make its reason understandable.

कोई व्यक्ति घबराए बिना भी किम्कर्तव्यविमूढ़ हो सकता है confused what to do (and what not to do)

मेरा उत्तर मेरे अनुमान पर ही आधारित था अतः उसे संशोधित और पुष्ट करने के लिए धन्यवाद |

एक शब्द के विषय में मुझे भी जिज्ञासा है | अंग्रेजी के शब्द margin(margin of the paper) जिसे हम उर्दू में हाशिया कहते हैं, को हिंदी में क्या कहते हैं ?

मैं इसका अर्थ काफी जगह खोज चूका हूँ किन्तु उत्तर नहीं मिला |

What does your enemy say?
इसका सीधा अर्थ तो यह है कि - आपका शत्रु क्या कहता है।
लेकिन यह एक मुहावरा है saying or phrase
तो इसका मतलब बताउए !

Great thread!

BTW, can we ask meaning to any word, or is it supposed to be only a phrase?
