Pink autos launched in Gurgaon by police to offer safe ride to women
These autos, which are meant exclusively for women, were reintroduced by the police on Friday. Twenty two autos have been registered for the initial run and would be available from MG Road Metro station. The pink autos were first introduced in 2010 but failed to garner a good response. However, this time, these autos will be equipped with special features like a panic button and a GPS system. "Gurgaon police is taking an initiative and I hope the government supports it. It is beneficial for women. It was started earlier too, but the government did not cooperate," said Amit Kumar, an auto driver. The service was hit by a number of snags when it was introduced earlier and was discarded after a subdued response. However, this time, the police is confident of its success. "We have started from MG Road but we will increase the services more. Currently there are 22 (autos). Every driver has gone through verification and we have appointed female police women officers too," Amit Kumar, a traffic inspector, said. Meanwhile, the customers too are hopeful that the pink autos would provide a sense of safety to them. "It is a nice facility and hopefully it will be successful this time. Last time, they were all very rude," said a woman passenger. |
