The 2010 Player Auction for Indian Premier League was held on 19th January 2010 in Mumbai. 97 players from cricket playing countries other than India have registered for the auction. Merely registering, however, does not guarantee the player will be included in the auction list. The IPL will send the list of 97 names to the franchises who will then select those players they would like included in the auction. The selected players were informed of their inclusion by January 5.
A total number of 66 overseas players were included in the final auction list. West Indian all rounder Kieron Pollard and New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond were the highest bid players in the auction who were bought for $750,000 but not before their prices went in the silent tie breaker round. Kieron Pollard was bought by Mumbai Indians and Shane Bond by Kolkata Knight Riders. However, in the most surprising development, not a single Pakistan player was signed up by any of the franchises, although most of the players of the Twenty20 champions were up for auction. The original list of 97 players, released on Saturday, was pared down to 96 after Chris Cairns' name was removed; the current list comprises players whom the franchises have specifically selected for the auction. Chris Cairns, a former New Zealand international, was controversially omitted earlier in the week by IPL boss Lalit Modi amid comments alleging the former Black Cap's suspension from the rebel Indian Cricket League was due to match-fixing. Cairns has vehemently denied the references and is considering legal action. 51 of the players registered for the player auction were shortlisted. Controversially all of England's players were omitted. According to Lalit Modi, this is because of "new conditions imposed by the ECB". Nine English players will feature in the IPL auction on January 19 after league officials said a dispute over NOCs had been resolved. This takes to 60 the number of players who will be involved in the auction. The auction list features players from Australia (11), South Africa (9), Sri Lanka (8), West Indies (8), Pakistan (7), New Zealand (4) and one each from Bangladesh, Canada, Holland and Zimbabwe. |

Chennai Super Kings
Chennai Super Kings, owned by India Cements, managed to get the prized services of Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the inaugural edition of IPL. Quite understandably, the Indian captain commanded the highest price at the player auctions - a whopping USD 1.5 million. Australia’s batting tour de force Matthew Hayden was roped in to give the batting a destructive edge - and he played his role to perfection in two successive seasons.
Stephen Fleming, who doubled as coach in the second season; the wily Muralitharan; batsman Suresh Raina; and all-rounder Albie Morkel helped Chennai reach the final but could not make it past Rajasthan Royals. When the second round of auctions took place, Andrew Flintoff joined as one of the highest-paid players. In the second season, Hayden scored prolifically while his team entered the semi-final, only to be pipped at the post by Royal Challengers Bangalore. Royal Challengers Bangalore, like Deccan Chargers, had ended up at the bottom of the table in the inaugural edition of IPL. Both teams ended up meeting in the final of IPL 2009 in South Africa. Anil Kumble-led RCB with great heart, but was unable to win the title. Kumble's most impressive virtues as a cricketer - grit and determination - came to the fore in South Africa. The side lost four of their first five matches in IPL 2009, but made a startling comeback to make it to the semi-finals.
The team qualified for the CLT20 but could not qualify for the knock-out stage. The team has undergone a sea-change in terms of personnel and support staff from Season 2008 with new coach Ray Jennings making a huge impact. Regular captain Kevin Pietersen's participation is still debatable owing to an extended injury break. Their only buy at the 2010 auction was Englishman Eoin Morgan, but they also have in their ranks India's under-19 captain Ashok Menaria while Nathan Bracken has been bought out.
