Even in defeat, the members of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s soccer team say they made their countrymen proud as the Balkan nation made its World Cup debut after decades of turmoil back home. A shot in the 85th minute by Vedad Ibisevic trickled in, marking Bosnia’s first goal and setting off a wild celebration from the small contingent of Bosnian fans on Sunday night in Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium. Argentina won 2-1, with its opening score coming on a Bosnian own-goal in the third minute. Thousands of Argentines gathered this weekend in Copacabana beach to sing and wave their flags. They spilled onto the street, prompting police to use pepper gas to free up traffic at one point. At a restaurant across the street, about 100 Bosnians had set up their camp. Mujo Mujdzic, 40, was one of the Bosnians who travelled to support his team, because he said football is the only thing going right in a country rife with government corruption. “Everything is bad, so this is very important for the people,” said Mujdzic, who now lives in Sweden. “We have shown that a small country, with 3.5 or 4 million people, can do this. We had war 20 years ago, and we’re here now. This is amazing.” Troubled history Hit hard during the violent break-up of the former Yugoslavia, Bosnia-Herzegovina lags former partners Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia, which have achieved membership or candidate status in the European Union. The nation’s 1992-1995 war resulted in the death of some 100,000 people and displaced tens of thousands more. Protests earlier this year calling for a new government brought about the worst violence since the war. Last month, the worst rainfall on record caused flooding in the Balkan nations, leaving thousands homeless and 46 dead, including at least 17 in Bosnia. “The country’s been through tough times for many years and it’s down to us to hopefully give them some joy,” goalkeeper Asmir Begovic told reporters after the game. “Giving people something to cheer about was fantastic.” Brazilians joined in cheering the underdog, which UK-based bookmaker Ladbrokes Plc gave 18-1 odds to win last night. Bosnia’s jersey was the second-most sold in a store in a Rio mall, after that of the Brazilian national team, O Globo reported. That support spurred Bosnia’s players, Ibisevic told reporters. “They saw that we were not that many in the stadium, so they wanted to help us,” he said. “We sure heard it.” First loss Bosnia-Herzegovina’s 2012 gross domestic product measured in purchasing power per capita was 29% of the European Union average, the least of all former Yugoslav nations, according to Eurostat. The dual Bosnia-Herzegovina government splits the country largely along ethnic lines between the mostly Muslim Federation and a Serbian part. Before the game, Bosnians on a subway car crammed full of chanting Argentines joked that the team had never lost a World Cup match. They lost by a single goal to the team Ladbrokes ranks second to win the tournament. Ladbrokes gives odds of 7-2 for Argentina to win the event, meaning a successful $2 wager will return $7 plus the original stake. Bosnia-Herzegovina has odds of 150-1 to win the tournament.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to witness the final of the Fifa World Cup 2014 currently being held in Brazil. Modi has to travel to Brazil for a summit of BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) which will be held between 15 and 17 July in the city of Fortaleza. The World Cup final will be held in Rio de Janeiro on 13 July. Given the proximity of the two events, the BRICS leaders have been invited by Brazil to the football final, the Brazilian Embassy said here on Monday. Last week, Modi had released commemorative postage stamps on the football World Cup.

Rio de Janeiro: Rio Lionel Messi can never be the man Argentina wants him to be, since that man is Diego Maradona, and in their eyes not even Messi—no matter what genius he conjures— will ever measure up to Maradona. So Messi’s best hope to win over his countrymen is with victories. The first came on Sunday night at Estádio do Maracanã, where Argentina opened Group F play with a 2-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. The game seemed a microcosm of Messi’s Argentina career, in which he has for years been his country’s best player but rarely its favourite. His jersey was well represented in the boisterously pro-Argentina crowd, and the cheers were deafening when he was introduced and when, less than three minutes later, he created the opening goal with a driven free kick. But in between ovations he was hectored by defenders, cajoled by the masses and, at one point, even roundly booed after wasting a chance in a 1-0 game. Still, with one shimmering run across the top of the penalty area and a rocketed shot, Messi won back the fans. The move took only a moment, but it reminded everyone of what Messi can offer with a tiny bit of space and a burst of uncatchable speed. Taking the ball on the right wing he accelerated past one defender, dropped another and then nudged the ball around two more. Before anyone could yell for him to shoot the ball, it was gone, pinging in off the left post behind Bosnia goalkeeper Asmir Begovic. As Messi tugged on his jersey and shouted with joy (or was it relief?), the fans danced in Maracanã’s concrete bowl. As he walked back to midfield for the restart, tens of thousands of them bowed toward his back. At least two Bosnians picked themselves up off the turf where he had left them behind. Bosnia threw a late scare into Argentina and its fans when its US-raised striker, Vedad Ibisevic, scored in the 85th minute, but that merely paused the adoration of Messi. There was no stopping it. “It is hard to play against Messi,” Bosnia coach Safet Susic said in what will no doubt be the understatement of the World Cup. “I had thought of man-marking him for 90 minutes, but that is impossible. But all of my players knew that whenever he had the ball we had to be close to him.” Bosnia’s first night at the World Cup could not have started much worse. A foul won far out on the left by Argentina’s Sergio Agüero set up a free kick. Messi curled the ball toward teammate Marcos Rojo at the penalty spot. Rojo flicked it on in the general direction of a teammate. But the ball landed instead at the feet of Bosnia defender Sead Kolasinac, and when it got tangled between them, he awkwardly redirected it into his own net. Less than three minutes in, Bosnia had been staggered. The team slowly steadied itself by coolly working the ball around, if only to keep it away from Messi, and went on to create some of the half’s best chances: Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero dashed off his line to stop Izet Hajrovic in the 13th minute and dived to his left to stop a point-blank header in the 40th. The teams had met in a friendly in St. Louis in November, with Argentina using a similar five-back formation and two Agüero goals to produce a 2-0 win. But on Sunday, the five-back setup rarely looked defensive; the outside backs, Rojo and Pablo Zabaleta, were often farther forward than even Messi. The problem was that, except for rare occasions, Messi could not find the room to do much with them, or for himself. The introduction at halftime of a second striker, Gonzalo Higua*n, was an admission by coach Alejandro Sabella that Messi needed some better options as well as, as he put it, something to give the Bosnian defenders “more company.” But Argentina had qualified with ease in a 4-3-3 formation, and it soon went to work. Agüero found space on the left with increasing regularity, and that began to open the middle. After Agüero won a free kick in the 63rd minute, Messi skied it over the bar, and his fans booed. When he scored minutes later, all was forgiven. Argentina is hoping this tournament finally brings out the best in Messi, who made his debut in the event with a goal in 2006 and then struggled under Maradona in 2010, when the team’s cluttered attacking formations never brought out his best, and he failed to score even once. Argentina bottomed out at the 2011 Copa América, where Messi was mercilessly booed by his home fans, but he has had a revival under Sabella. Sabella’s first move was to name Messi his captain, and his star responded by leading the team in scoring as it finished first in South American qualifying. Sabella, a grandfatherly looking man, seems to have made it his top priority to put Messi at ease and in a position to succeed. (His daughter has been less supportive, reportedly telling a radio interviewer this spring that Messi “lacks some of the heart and soul” to play for Argentina, a notion that is quite common there.) “I believe that Messi knows perfectly what his responsibility is with the national team,” Sabella told Spanish newspaper Marca before the World Cup. “We all have pressure for being there. We have to leave him relaxed. You do not have to talk with him. He knows it all well.” Coaches have said and tried this before. José Pékerman, who is coaching Colombia at this World Cup, ushered a then-teenage Messi on to Argentina’s national team in 2005, at a time when Spain was recruiting him, and coached him in 2006, when he scored his only World Cup goal before Sunday’s. Pékerman’s face brightened last week when he recalled those days. He said, “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing” when he first brought in Messi. Pékerman predicted that Messi, now in his prime at 26 despite a disappointing season at Barcelona, was ready to deliver the prize both the player and his country covet: a World Cup in Brazil to match the one Maradona brought home from Mexico in 1986.
