India Needs To Change in 2013
Indians are known to be the most patient civilization in history, let it be dealing with waiting for delayed trains, corruption or social welfare. This year has set a new trend of flux in the country. There are many who have chosen to take the torch and march towards an immaculate future. The list of things that needs attention in the country might seem never-ending. Keeping that in mind, here are the top five things in India that need dire attention to change for better in 2013, as listed by ET Bureau.

1. Capital punishment
Capital punishment or better known as death penalty is a legit procedure in which a person is put to death for a crime by the state or nation as a penalty for committing the crime. Capital punishment was practiced by many countries in the past but in the modern world it’s been practiced only by 58 countries where as 97 countries have abolished it. The trend towards abolishing the capital punishment in many countries started since World War II holocaust. Capital punishment is believed to be an archaic punishment now which is not suitable for civil nations to practice. In a world with suicide bombers and kamikazes, death penalty is barely a mark of justice. In many countries death penalty is a subject of active controversy. A Supreme Court bench informed that it’s about time for India to reconsider the jurisprudence that leads to death penalty. This was decided two weeks after Ajmal Kasab, the 26/11 terrorist was hanged to death.

2. Yamuna
Ganga’s largest tributary Yamuna is one of the holy rivers that is prayed and preached in the country. Now Yamuna is crying to be cleaned from the muck and filth it’s loaded with by people. Back in 1909 Yamuna waters were described as ‘clear blue’ as against the silted yellow waters of the Ganga then. With the high density of growth in population and significant industrial advances Yamuna is now one of the most polluted rivers in the world as per the UN report. Especially the part of river that flows around New Delhi is severely polluted as the city dumps over 50 percent of its waste into the river. The Union government informed the Lok Sabha in 2009 that the Ganga Action Plan (GAP) and the Yamuna Action Plan (YAP) have failed, expounding that the rivers are not cleaner now than it was two decades ago, even after the government spends Rs 1, 700 crore to control the pollution in these rivers. With time the river has also become a corpse dump yard, adding to the overwhelming pollution.

3. Indian Sporting Bodies
Corruption in Indian is widely spread, that there are hardly any fields left where it hasn’t penetrated, spoiling the spirit of people involved. Applying this theory to the Indian sporting bodies there aren’t many who would disagree with the fact that Indian sporting bodies need a good clean up, getting rid of all the corrupt politicians who have tainted the passion for sports in the country. The events that led to the India’s ban from the Olympics were few but heavy to deal with, such as the top officials being elected unopposed, much before the poll date given by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the return of Lalit Bhanot to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) as the new secretary general after Bhanot was released on bail after being in custody for 11 months over corruption charges during the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi. Now Indian sporting stars can participate in Olympics only under the Olympic flag. It sounds unfortunate but most of the sporting stars think this is for the best expecting cleaner sporting bodies after this ban.

4. Universal broadband
The broadband universal service or otherwise known as universal broadband service is a government plan to ensure all citizens in a given nation have access to Internet services. The discussion of expanding the traditional universal voice service plans to include broadband service has been going on for several years now in many countries. As argued by the tech adviser of former U.S. President Bill Clinton, Raj Reddy stated that the lower is a nation in the human development index, the larger or higher would be its broadband needs. Reasoning his statement, it means that nation with illiterate or semi-literate people who can't read instructions can still avail of online services when visuals replace text. The first country in the world to provide broadband universal service to its populace was Switzerland in January 2008. The main aim of the universal broadband service is to mitigate the digital split, which is the differing quantity of information accessible to those with broadband internet access against those who don’t have the broadband access.

5. Ban on sedition
The incidents and arrests in the country has questioned the validity of the laws that enforce ban on free speech, tagged as sedition. An archaic law, been there since the time of British rule, under Section 124-A in the Indian penal code. There is no reasoning for this law practiced in a democratic country where it is charged in all its forms, as in the case of Section 66A of the IT Act which applies the same. It was rightly said by Mahatma Gandhi in 1922 when he was charged for sedition, he said, “Section 124-A, under which I am happily charged, is perhaps the prince among the political sections of the Indian Penal Code designed to suppress the liberty of the citizens. Affection cannot be manufactured or regulated by law. If one has an affection for a person or system, one should be free to give the fullest expression to his disaffection, so long as he does not contemplate, promote or incite to violence. But the section under which Mr Banker and I are charged is one under which mere promotion of disaffection is a crime.” It is hard to believe that in India we still have to think before practicing one of our fundamental rights, but is change around the corner? It’s about time India reconsiders its steps and works to build a better country, before everything melts down to nothing. The list has only the major things that needs fixing up, however there are many other things that are demanding attention but getting none.

जय भारद्वाज जी ने एक बेहद विचारणीय विषय हम सबके सामने रखा है. देशद्रोह और फांसी की सजा के मामले पर सरकारी तथा न्यायिक स्तर पर विचार विमर्श चल रहा है और देश द्रोह के जितने भी मामले पिछले कुछ महीनों में सामने आये हैं उसने it क़ानून की धाराओं में व्यापक संशोधन की आवश्यकता महसूस की जा रही है.
गंगा-यमुना जैसी देश की पवित्र नदियों की जो दुर्दशा की गई है उससे सभी देश वासियों का सर शर्म से झुक जाना चाहिए. हम सफ़ाई करने के नाम पर ऐक्शन प्लान बना कर हज़ारों करोड़ रूपए खर्च कर सकते हैं लेकिन उन स्थितियों पर रोक नहीं लगा पा रहे जो इस सबके लिए उत्तरदायी हैं. नदी के मार्ग पर बसे हर शहर के नालों-सीवरों की और औद्योगिक इकाइयों की गन्दगी बड़ी बेशर्मी से, बिना कानूनी दखल के इन नदियों में फेंकी जा रही है. इनमें धार्मिक कर्मकांड और रीति-रिवाज और पाखण्ड से पैदा होने वाले कूड़े कचरे को भी शामिल कर सकते हैं. यह एक सामूहिक दुष्कर्म नहीं तो और क्या है? इस काम में तो स्थानीय निकाय और एड्मिनिस्ट्रेशन भी बराबर के दोषी है. जब तक सरकार इसे रोकने के लिए भी कड़े से कड़े कदम नहीं उठाएगी और दोषियों को सख्त से सख्त सजा नहीं दी जायेगी तब तक दिखावे और ढकोसलेबाजी यूं ही चलती रहेगी. पवित्र नदियों की बे-हुर्मती होती रहेगी. कानून तो हैं परन्तु उन्हें ईमानदारी से और तत्काल पभाव से लागू करने की घोर आवश्यकता है. यदि हम समय रहते नहीं चेते तो वह समय दूर नहीं जब देश की सभी छोटी बड़ी नदियां गंदे नालों में तब्दील हो जायेंगी. और तो और, जिन नदियों के किनारे प्राचीन काल से सभ्यताऐं बसती रहीं हैं, और जिनका हमें गर्व है, उन्हीं के किनारे बैठ कर कहीं हमें उन्हीं महान सभ्यतायों का विसर्जन न देखना पड़े.
