Thumbs down 10 Common Misconceptions About Hair Fall

There are several common misconceptions surrounding hair loss and hair growth. But do you know the truth? Read on to find out.

Myth #1: Sunlight makes hair grow
Contrary to popular belief, your hair doesn’t need sunlight to grow. The hair follicle is below the surface of the skin and therefore isn’t dependant on sunlight.

Myth #2: A wig or hat can stop hair growth
Neither a wig nor a hat will interfere with the growth of hair, as hair grows from the follicle. However, any covering on the head may rub against the scalp causing hair breakage.

Myth #3: Daily wash can affect hair growth
There is no evidence that daily shampooing is harmful to the scalp or hair. Wash it as often as you like, although the recommendation is thrice a week.

Myth #4: Taking vitamins will promote hair growth
We are born with about 100,000 hair follicles and they decrease gradually until middle age. So vitamins will help you get a healthy constitution but not a thicker mane.

Myth #5: Stress causes hair loss
Only severe traumatic stress has been known to cause a temporary and sudden thinning of hair. Once the stress level is less, in almost all cases, hair growth returns to normal.

Myth #6: Scalp massage promotes hair growth
Scalp massage cannot stimulate hair growth. The hair follicles are beneath the skin, and they are not receptive to physical stimulation.

Myth #7: Frequent trims make hair grow faster
Hair grows half-an-inch per month, whether you cut it or not. It has nothing to do with your stylist's scissors.

Myth #8: Having dandruff causes hair loss
People who lose hair may also have dandruff but there seems to be no association between hair loss and dandruff.

Myth #9: Hair loss doesn’t affect young women
Hair loss and thinning doesn’t age-discriminate and can affect girls as young as 12 years of age.

Myth #10: Plucking grey stimulates new hair growth
While this isn't true, plucking out those grey strands is not a good habit. You can damage the roots, causing infection or leaving a scar.
